The Third World Forum of Intermediary Cities: A Platform for Sustainable Transformation
Intermediary cities are pivotal players in fostering territorial cohesion, rural-urban integration, and human-scale development, yet they have often been overlooked in global agendas. The UCLG Forum on Intermediary Cities seeks to change this by creating a dedicated space for advocacy, collaboration, and policy innovation.
Hosted in Cuenca, Ecuador, a city emblematic of sustainable and inclusive urbanism, this third edition highlights the potential of intermediary cities in addressing the climate emergency, promoting ecological transformation, and redefining urban-rural relationships. Cuenca's leadership as organizer underscores its commitment to advancing the role of intermediary cities globally, making it the ideal backdrop for these transformative discussions.
Building on the success of the Chefchaouen Declaration (2018) and the Kütahya Declaration (2021), the forum will engage city leaders, international institutions, and key partners like OECD and UN-Habitat to co-develop strategies for resilient and inclusive futures. Through a participatory approach, this edition will culminate in a World Declaration, reflecting regional and global consultations and setting a roadmap for action.
Join us in Cuenca to shape the future of intermediary cities and ensure their rightful place at the heart of global sustainable development!
